Question 8-48F5

Element 8 (RADAR)

A non-magnetic screwdriver should always be used when replacing what component?

Explanation
Magnetrons generate high-power microwaves by interacting electrons with a strong magnetic field, which is often supplied by powerful permanent magnets integrated into the tube. Using a ferrous (magnetic) screwdriver near these magnets can cause the screwdriver to become magnetized, attract metal filings that could short-circuit the component, or even alter the magnetron's internal magnetic field alignment. This interference can degrade performance, change the operating frequency, or permanently damage the magnetron. Therefore, a non-magnetic screwdriver prevents these issues, ensuring proper function and longevity. TR tubes, mixers, and video amplifiers do not rely on strong magnetic fields for their operation, making the use of a non-magnetic screwdriver less critical for these components from a magnetic interference perspective.
