Element 8 (RADAR)

In a RADAR unit, the mixer uses a:

Explanation
Radar units operate at microwave frequencies, requiring specialized components for efficient frequency conversion in the receiver's mixer stage. Silicon crystals, often realized as point-contact diodes (like Schottky diodes), are crucial because their non-linear characteristics efficiently mix the incoming microwave signal with a local oscillator signal to produce a lower intermediate frequency (IF). These diodes are chosen for their excellent high-frequency performance and low noise. PIN diodes also exhibit suitable properties for microwave mixing applications. Pentagrid converter tubes are older vacuum tube devices primarily used in lower-frequency AM broadcast receivers. While field-effect transistors (FETs) and microwave transistors can be used in some mixer designs (active mixers), silicon crystal and PIN diodes are very common and often preferred for passive mixer designs in radar front ends due to their specific high-frequency diode characteristics, simplicity, and noise performance.
