Satellite EPIRBs (Emergency Position-Indicating Radiobeacons) are purpose-built for distress alerting and location within the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). When activated, they transmit a distress signal and precise position data, often from an integrated GPS receiver, to the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite system. This global network relays the information to Rescue Coordination Centers, enabling rapid and accurate pinpointing of the distress source over vast areas. While MF/HF DSC (Digital Selective Calling) is excellent for transmitting distress alerts and position data over long distances to other vessels or shore stations, it relies on terrestrial reception. Radio Direction Finders and VHF homing devices are short-range, line-of-sight tools primarily used for final "homing in" on a distress signal once search and rescue assets are already in the vicinity, not for initial wide-area location. EPIRBs provide the most effective and integrated system for initial global location.
