Question 6A421

Element 6 (Radiotelegraph)

What point on a shipboard antenna system displays the maximum potential?

Explanation
On a resonant antenna, such as those commonly used on ships, standing waves of voltage and current are established along its length. These waves are 90 degrees out of phase. At the physical ends of the antenna element, current is at its minimum, ideally a current null. Conversely, where current is minimal, voltage reaches its maximum – this point is known as a voltage anti-node or peak potential. Therefore, the highest electrical potential on a resonant antenna is found at its physical ends. The end furthest from the transmission line connections is one such point of maximum voltage. The center of a resonant antenna typically has maximum current and minimum voltage, making options B and C incorrect.
